Thorium: The Latest ‘Best Browser You’ve Got to Try’

Depiction of the Thorium browser

As a self proclaimed computer geek and tech writer, I am always on the lookout for new software that will help me do what I do faster, easier, more efficiently, and more comfortably. I recently ran across yet another Chromium-based browser known as Thorium. I also discovered that Thorium is the latest ‘best browser you have got to try’.

Every time a new browser hits the market, there are those who jump on board quickly and proclaim how the rest of us should be using it. I don’t worry about that. I get the fact that people are excited about new software even if it’s bad. Nonetheless, I decided to give Thorium a try. Why? Because a number of videos, including this one, proclaimed Thorium as the fastest browser online. I wanted to try it for myself.

It Really is Fast

I have used just about every major browser at least once, along with a bunch of minor ones. I have used browsers based on Chromium and Firefox. I have used WebKit browsers. I have used browsers built on Blink, Gecko, KHTML, in more. I will testify to the fact that Thorium is the fastest I have used thus far. It is lightning fast.

Full disclosure requires letting you know that I use multiple browsers for different tasks. I am a big fan of Slimjet for when I have to use Google tools. That’s all I use it for. I used to use it as my daily browser but, as a Linux user, I discovered that Slimjet breaks too easily with all of the updates Linux is subject to.

I use Waterfox for watching live, streaming video. It always does what I ask it to do without complaining. As for my daily work, I was using Brave until about three months ago. Unfortunately, Brave is getting bloated. It was also getting extremely slow on my system. I switched to Microsoft Edge and now enjoy a much better experience at work.

As for Thorium, I installed it a couple of days ago and started using it in place of Edge. I’m not ready to give up on Edge yet. It is still on my system. But I figured I would give Thorium I’ll workout for the next couple of weeks to see what it can do. Again, my first impressions are that the browser truly is fast.

A Bunch of Patches

So how has Thorium been made to be so fast? Its creator has applied more than a dozen patches to speed things up. You can see exactly what he’s done by looking at his page here. He has also removed some of the things that privacy-focused internet users hate about Google and Chromium. But don’t misunderstand. This is still a Chromium-based browser. There are some privacy concerns with Chromium that you can’t ever get away from.

Thorium also offers a few extra features you don’t get from other Chromium-based browsers. For example, your browsing history is never saved in the address bar. That’s a big issue for some people. Thorium also blocks the installation of Chrome extensions out of the box. The extensions can be installed manually. Another option is to install a Thorium-specific plugin first. It will then handle installing extensions from the Chrome store. You can find instructions on the developer’s website.

Again, this is still Chromium at its core. So if you have a general suspicion of all Chromium-based browsers to the extent that you believe they are all insecure, Thorium isn’t for you. But if you already use a Chromium-based browser and you want to do so at a noticeably faster speed, give Thorium a try. It is the fastest browser I have ever used.
